'The Pogues ‘Fairytale Of New York’ singer, Shane Macgowen created using Brains Faggots. As a welsh gay man, I thought this piece of art would be humorous and open up a conversation. I hear the word faggot and I instantly think the food. I love faggots and peas for dinner, I’m a valleys boy! I’ve also been horrendously bullied in my teens and that was often a word used. I go into schools to give art classes and often talk about my anti bullying experience. I really do have a mixed bag of feelings on the lyric in the song. The calls to boycott the song for the lyric, even though Shane Macgowen has expressed it was never meant to offend, and at the time was meant as a term for ‘a lazy person’ in the song, have caused controversy. Do I like how PC the world has become? Not really. Comedians and artist seem to really get struck down. Does the song that’s brought so much joy to Christmas over the years deserve a ban? Or at least a bleep maybe? I’m still unsure. I grew up in fear of the word QUEER which now the LGBT community appear to have taken under their wing and ‘owned’ especially with shows like Queer Eye For The Straight Guy etc (which I love) so it difficult to know where to put my feelings on these topics. I often make art to start a conversation or enhance a current one. The Greggs Jesus advert for example I painted Christ using a sausage roll, Theresa May I made using Tresemme shampoo... not to forget Trump with Mexican food and another time in red paintballs fired from a gun.'See also:
