'Are you looking to have a lush green food plot this spring ? Well I would argue that seeding Winter Rye Grain in the fall, into your Fall Hunting Food Plots will lead to an amazing green carpet by end of March in spring. Winter Rye Grain (and NOT Rye Grass) or Cereal Rye grows super easy and is simple to plant . Although maybe on the lower end of preferred food choices for Deer as compared to say Soy Beans, Rye will become highly sought after by your herd once all the native food has died and browned-up in fall. This Cereal Grain will remain green into the cold winter temperatures long after the rest has died for the season . Also what’s great is on those warm sunny winter days this crop will start to grow. That means even before it’s officially spring your food plot will be back and green again. This early green up is very important for Deer survival at the very end of winter/pre-spring time frame . Rye also is great as a cover crop, that has natural weed suppression tendencies . I used it as a base to frost seed clover into for my Turkey Spring Food Plot. The clover seed fills the gaps between the Rye leading to a great place to meet up with hungry Turkey in the spring . As a final thought, keep in mind Winter Rye is only an annual crop, which means you do need to seed again every year in the fall. But as stated earlier it’s really easy to grow and is fairly cheap as seed prices go Enjoy and go out there & grow a food plot
