'YorkTalks 2022: Food for thought - a culinary and cultural journey across Muslim South Asia'

'Drawing from the delicious anthology of 18 essays and stories she commissioned for her latest book, Desi Delicacies, Professor Claire Chambers reveals how the richness of Muslim South Asian kitchens confounds the stereotypes of what is a diverse and complex global culture. She uses food as an easy entry point into discussions on difficult topics – from identity and religion to gender and patriarchy – and garnishes these hot topics with arguments about when and how to use turmeric in certain dishes and whether the word curry is itself racist. Living in Peshawar as a young Western woman in the 1990s has endowed her with a strong empathy for the people and the region and enables her to talk with authority and first-hand knowledge of a much misunderstood and disputed part of the world. Food for thought - a culinary and cultural journey across Muslim South Asia is a talk from Professor Claire Chambers in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York, given as part of the annual YorkTalks event in January 2022.
