'Science Experiment on how to Test for starch in various food items using Iodine'

01:56 Apr 17, 2023
'In todays video i will demonstrate test for starch in various food items using iodine. For this activity we need iodine, bread, coconut, cornstarch sugar salt and rice. First we will show the color of iodine. As you can see, it is redish-brown in color. Now we will put few drops of iodine on these food items. First we will put on bread, the color changes to bluish- black in color which means bread has starch. Now we will few drops of iodine on coconut the color dosent to bluish-black which means coconut dosent have starch. Now we will put cornstarch powder, the color changes to bluish- black which means coenstarch has starch. Now we will put on sugar the color dosent change there is no starch in sugar. We will put on salt the color dosent change this means there is no starch in salt. We will put on rice the color changes to bluish- black which means rice has starch. Now we will group the items having starch and not having starch. We see that bread, rice and cornstarch have starch present in them whereas salt sugar and coconut do not do not have starch. Why does the color change to bluish black? Iodine reacts with starch to form a blueish-black compound. The blueish-black color is basically the formation of poly iodide chains from the reaction of starch and iodine.
